Tips for Goal Kicking-With super boot Daryl Halligan

The key bases are:

  • Have your kickers develop a positive attitude. If talking to kickers about kicking then talk about the successful aspects they have experienced (e.g. goals kicked in the past or kicking well in past). They should see themselves as successful goal kickers.

  • Then they must take that confidence from the training paddock (putting the time in to practice). Start with simple goals from in front, 25m out, then 35 metres and kick 25-35 kicks per session with no more than 35m on any angle to engender a high (80% or more) success level.

  • The harder kicks will fall into place if this basis has been laid. By kicking these close goals and achieving 80+% success at training the kicker will complement his/her visualisation by actions that reinforce it.

Techniques

Although some aspects of technique are individual:

  • Make sure you are as upright as possible and over the top of the ball when striking the kick.

  • Having your opposite shoulder upright and tall helps your body to be over the top of the ball.

  • The run up varies according to each kicker but should be balanced and lead to 1 and 2.

Coaches

  • Kickers must be helped to visualise themselves successfully doing it. Do this 3 or 4 times after placing the ball and before kicking it. This visualisation is the most important element, along with positiveness, for successful goal kicking

  • Need to set goal kicking tasks in a proactive consideration of the % they want in a game e.g. 80%+ in front, those to the side as a bonus.
Look for potential kickers in players who have natural timing in their kicking

  • Look for potential kickers in players who have natural timing in their kicking.

  • Have your kickers warm up before a game with 3 or 4 kicks (into a blanket on a doorway or on a back field). Their focus is provided for in this way.
