Last year was a mixed year for CR with some success and some not so very pleasant memories. But that is now in the past and now we have a brand new season, with the chance to recapture our past glory and to prove beyond a doubt that the CR team is a force to be reckoned with in the local rugby scene. The team is once again led by hard working Pavithra Fernando and is a predominantly young team well balanced with the experience of several veterans of the CR. Interestingly this year the squad features no less than 5 past CR captains and a host of players who have captained their college teams. The CR team will be coached by Australian Grant Dwyer who has been working hard on building up the levels of fitness and skills of the team. The team is shaping up well, the players are excited and determined that this year is going to be our year of glory. We already have 2 of the under 24 titles for the year and were unfortunate to have lost the Singer 7’s title by a mere 2 points for reasons best left unsaid.

The first game of the season was played on the 22nd of April at Welisara against the Navy, where we had a hard fought, well earned win. The score line of 22-3 might not say it all, but for the first game of the season, it was a good tester for the team.

On Friday the 29th of April the CR team will take on the high riding Army Sports Club who had a good game against the law enforcement men. As our coach has predicted “defence will be our best attack” and we hope to see some solid defence and some searing runs to the touch line from our team. So please come down in numbers to Galle Face on Friday the 29th, make it a sea of red and blue and cheer CR team on in their quest to be the Champions for 2005.

Our next game is at home on the 8th of May (Sunday) against Police Sports Club.
