U21's Brush Aside Nalandian's

By Grant Dwyer

In another one sided affair at Havelock Park , CR brushed aside the Nalandian team to win 60 – 0 on Sunday. Although the win is not anything to crow about, the CR team looked to be playing structured and controlled rugby throughout the match. The team were slow to get going in the first half and did not register any points until the 10 minute mark, mainly due to some pedantic officiating in the middle. The penalty count may have been upward of 10 against in the first 15 minutes of the game. Wisely Nalandian's attempted to “Steal” some points off CR with time wasting penalty conversion attempts (one attempt resembled a general play kick for the winger and was duly rewarded with an appropriate chuckle from the crowd).

Surely these lesser skilled teams would want to kick for touch and give themselves an opportunity to compete at the lineout and keep the ball in play for longer periods rather than wasting valuable game time with conversion attempts in the first minute of the game that they have no chance of winning.

Good performances were displayed from all of the team and our recent new signing from CH Achulanga, had a solid debut in the red jersey. His defence is going to serve CR well next League season and his straight hard running make him a good candidate to slot into the inside center position. Pushpakumara once again showed his skill putting player after player into space and that step that seems to confuse everyone bar himself. He is a smart player who has the patience to wait for the right time in the match to unleash. Unfortunately for CR he will be playing in a tourney at Dubai this week so he will miss the quarter final against Panadura but we may have Sherrif back from the National Squad so we can fill his absence.

Fullback Shane Aravinda played well and was returning the ball well until the referee sent him to the sin bin for 10 minutes for a dangerous tackle. This decision would have to be classified as one of the classic blunders by a referee in 2005 and with only a handful of matches remaining for the year I think the SLRRA should just award it to the official in question now. Tries by Rakitha, Karthelis, Shane, Achulanga, Podi, Risney and a late screamer by Dharmaraja winger Asanka put the final nail into the Nalandian coffin. Fresh legs against a tired opposition were the perfect ingredients as Asanka received a pass outside his own 22m and proceeded to give the opposition a quick lesson on side stepping and speed as he dodged 5 defenders on his way to the opposition line. Great to watch and a highlight from the game.

Next match 5.00pm Thursday 20th October at Havelock Park v Panadura
