Asanga’s two try burst fail to secure a sevens win for CR

Although losing to the home town favorites, CR and FC played a flat-out game from the start and made it tough for Kandy all the way as they led the game by 14 points to 12 at the lemons. But a few crucial lapses from CR and also the referee gave Kandy some breathing space to return to the game and snatch the lead mid-way in the second half.

The winners collected their points through three goals and a try while the Red Hot Red Shirts responded with two goals and two tries.

Kandy play-maker Pradeep Liyanage did not hold back anything and led from the front by scoring two tries in the final after crossing the line twice in the semi final to help his team beat defending inter club Sevens champions Army (24- 7). Nalaka Weerakkody and skipper Sanjeewa Jayasinghe scored one try each in the final while Asanga Rodrigo scored two tries for CR. Mohammed Sherif and Wekadapola scored one try each for the losers.

CR have not been successful in winning a sevens title since 1996. In the semi finals CR and FC beat last year's runners up Havelocks by 29 points to 5 to enter the final.

Yesterday's final was witnessed by a near packed stadium which organizers estimated to be around 5000 spectators.

Singer Sri Lanka limited sponsored the tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union. Nizam Jamaldeen refereed the Cup final
